Tesla and SpaceX Chief Elon Musk, the technological futurist, has triggered yet another world debate—this time by tying humanity’s future source of energy with a Soviet theory formed in the early part of last century. Musk, earlier, declared that the entire world would implement solar energy fully only when it becomes aware of the Kardashev Scale, an imagined template set by Soviet astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev way back in 1964.

The Kardashev Scale rates civilizations on the basis ofwhether or not they can harness energy. Type I is capable of harnessing all of the energy on its planet, Type II can harness the energy of its star, and Type III can harness power from its galaxy. Musk would place the current civilization of Earth at around 0.73 on this scale, or that it has much untapped potential when it comes to energy, particularly by solar means.

Solar power, in Musk’s view, is not only the cleanest and most abundant source but also the most practical path to a Type I civilization. He asserts that one can cover quite a small section of land—such as a piece of Texas or New Mexico—with solar panels to provide the entire energy requirements of the United States. Based on his calculations, a mere 2.5 square kilometers of solar machinery could provide about 3 gigawatt-hours of power, which is enough to power a large city.

This is in harmony with Musk’s long-term investment commitment in solar technology through Tesla, offering solar roofs and battery storage units with the objective of decentralizing and democratizing energy access. According to him, a solar revolution for the world is not a great idea—it’s inevitable.

By putting the Kardashev Scale into everyday language, Musk is trying to raise society’s eyes to the level of energy issues. Solar power, in his imagination, is not just a clean source of energy, but a stepping stone to a next-generation technological and civilization jump. His message is clear: harnessing the potential of solar power is not only feasible, but inevitable for humanity’s next step of evolution.
