Google Gemini in Drive Becomes Smarter: Now Summarizes Videos for You

Prime Highlights:

  • Google’s Gemini AI now sums up videos on Google Drive, enhancing productivity for Workspace users.
  • The feature determines key points and action items from captioned videos, available through chat.

Key Facts:

  • Captioning videos is critical for the analysis and summaries by Gemini.
  • Accessible as a chatbot or via Drive’s preview overlay.
  • Now being rolled out to some Workspace and AI Premium users.

Key Background :

Google has updated its Gemini AI integration in Google Drive to add video analysis functions, a leap from its earlier emphasis on documents, PDFs, and text-based content. With the update, Gemini now can view and analyze video files saved in Drive—if they contain captions—and summarize them, derive useful action points, and answer user questions about the content.

The capability is aimed at increasing productivity, particularly for commercial and enterprise users who have to handle long meeting recordings, training sessions, or presentations. People can communicate with Gemini through a chatbot interface and pose questions like “What was discussed about the marketing plan?” or “What are the next steps from this meeting?” The capability enables the quick availability of key information without fast-forwarding through hours of video.

To utilize the feature, users can open Gemini from the file preview overlay in Drive or open the file in a new window with Gemini turned on. The AI tool uses video captions to understand and summarize the video. If captions are not available, the tool will not work efficiently.

This feature started rolling out on May 28, 2025, to users with Gemini for Google Workspace (Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Essentials/Standard/Plus), and Google One AI Premium subscribers. The rollout will complete on scheduled-release domains by June 16.

In addition, Google is expanding video engagement metrics in Drive. Users will be able to view view counts and open statistics for video files within the “Details” panel, giving users a greater insight into content reach and engagement.

These developments underscore Google’s more general AI integration strategy throughout Workspace tools, making Gemini a hub productivity assistant. As Gemini continues to mature, it seeks to close the gaps between different content types and user workflows—turning Drive into more than merely a storage solution but an intelligent assistant for routine work.
